Professor Karl T. Chuang is an award winning authority with extensive expertise and experience in catalysis, mass transfer, and electrochemistry, in particular research on applications of catalysis for manufacture of chemicals and for addressing environmental problems, and design, synthesis and applications of electrochemical and catalyst systems for industrial applications. After undergraduate studies at National Cheng-Kung University, Taiwan, he became a research engineer at Taiwan Sugar Corp. Then he entered post-graduate studies and obtained his M.Sc. at St. Francis Xavier University and his Ph.D. at The University of Alberta. Following his Ph.D. he performed research in catalysis, separations technologies and applications of electrochemistry for isotope separation at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, rising to Section Head, and served concurrently as Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Ottawa. In 1986 he joined The University of Alberta as Professor of Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering where, since 2006, he is an Emeritus Professor. Professor Chuang is acknowledged as a world-leading expert in separations technologies and applications of electrochemistry for separations, chemical conversions and generation of energy using fuel cells. In particular, his joint research programs (with Professor Jingli Luo and others) have developed new materials and processes in fuel cells for conversion of H2S hydrocarbons and syngas in environmentally friendly co-generation of energy and clean products.
